Tooth Extractions

Safe, gentle, and sometimes necessary

Sometimes, removing a tooth is necessary to protect your overall health. Whether it’s due to decay, damage, or crowding, we make sure the experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

When is a tooth extraction needed?

Tooth extractions are only recommended when truly necessary. Common reasons include:

• Deep decay or infection beyond repair
• Advanced gum disease affecting stability
• Broken teeth that cannot be restored
• Impacted or overcrowded teeth (such as wisdom teeth)
• Preparing for orthodontics, dentures, or implants
Your dentist will walk you through every option before recommending an extraction.

What to Expect During the Procedure

• Local anaesthesia is used to numb the area for a pain-free experience
• Sedation options are available if you’re feeling anxious
• The extraction is performed gently and efficiently
• You'll receive step-by-step guidance before, during, and after the procedure

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the extraction process hurt?
Not at all. The area will be completely numbed, and we offer sedation if you need extra support. We will not commence an extraction unless you are comfortable with the level of local anaesthesia provided.

I’m really anxious about my tooth extraction — what sedation options are available?

For patients who are nervous or anxious, we offer Nitrous Oxide Sedation (NOS) — also known as “happy gas” or “laughing gas.” This is a safe and effective way to help you feel calm and comfortable throughout your procedure.

What is Nitrous Oxide Sedation (NOS)?

NOS is a gentle, inhaled gas delivered through a small nose mask. It helps reduce anxiety and promotes a sense of calm while allowing you to remain awake and responsive. It’s commonly used for a wide range of dental procedures, including extractions.

Is NOS suitable for children?

Yes! Nitrous Oxide is our recommended sedation option for children who are feeling nervous or may have difficulty sitting through treatment. It is:

  • Safe and well-tolerated in children and adults

  • Fast-acting and wears off quickly after the procedure

  • Minimally invasive — no needles or oral medication required

  • Easily adjustable throughout the procedure

  • Helpful in building positive dental experiences for young patients

Most children tolerate it very well and often feel relaxed and even a bit giggly during treatment — which is why it’s often called “happy gas.”

Dr Scott Sisam has been offering this unique form of sedation for over a decade. He frequently receives referrals from orthodontists for tooth extractions in children using NOS.

How long does it take for the mouth to heal after a tooth extraction?
Most patients feel significantly better within 2–3 days. Full healing may take a couple of weeks depending on the complexity.

Do I need to replace the tooth afterward?
In many cases, yes — especially for chewing function or appearance. We’ll talk about your options, including implants, bridges, or partial dentures.

Can I go back to work the same day?
For simple extractions, many patients return to work the next day. We’ll advise based on your individual case.
