Check-up and X-rays
Why do regular Dental Check-ups matter?
Regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining a healthy smile and preventing dental issues before they become serious. During these visits, your dentist can:
Detect problems early – such as cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer – when they’re easier and less costly to treat.
Keep your teeth clean and strong – by removing plaque and tartar that daily brushing can miss.
Provide expert advice – on your oral hygiene routine, diet, and habits like grinding or smoking.
Protect your overall health – since oral health is closely linked to conditions like heart disease and diabetes.
By visiting your dentist every 12 months, you’re investing in your long-term health and confidence. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference.
What do we do?
During your dental examination at Sisam Dental in Whakatāne, we carry out a thorough assessment of your oral health using both digital dental X-rays and a detailed clinical examination. We take X-rays on each side of your mouth to assess your back teeth, allowing us to identify decay, infections, or issues not visible to the naked eye. This is followed by a careful visual inspection, where we correlate what we see on the X-rays with what we observe in your mouth.
We then evaluate your bite alignment and jaw movement to check for signs of wear, grinding, or jaw discomfort. Your gums and soft tissues are also carefully examined using gentle probing to assess gum health and detect early signs of gum disease. Where appropriate, we remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains to help maintain healthy teeth and gums.
After your dental check-up, we clearly explain our findings and work with you to create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs. Our focus is on preventative care and long-term oral health, ensuring you receive the most effective and appropriate dental treatment.
How long does it take?
15-30 minutes, depending on if it's a recall or new check-up and the complexity of your dental needs.
